The Cut

The last century has witnessed the emergence of many new stated, mainly with the end of major wars and decolonization.  After the Second World War the conception of state succession has gained increasing role in the international affair, generally due the importance of its legal effect on states relations. On one hand we witnessed the reunion of Germany and the integration of the European states into unified frameworks of politics, economics and legal systems devoid of a unified territory. On the contrary we had the breakdown of the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. In Africa, the artificial borders of states that were drawn by colonial power have lead to major problems between the different ethnic groups who are displaced between different borders. The later, however, had lead to breaking down of some African states and perhaps the newly case of Sudan is a fresh example. While the case of Sudan fits more in the in scope of secession rather than the wider umbrella of succession, it however; raised similar concern regarding the national property, debt, nationality, and the issue of recognition.
